A Guide on Using Garage Door Lubricant

According to one study, each year there are about 30,000 accidents that are related to garage doors.

In order to make sure that you prevent any garage injuries, you should make sure that your garage door is always working properly. To help it work properly, you should use garage door lubricant.

Is this the first time that you’ve had to use lubricant for your garage? Keep reading to find the perfect guide on how to use it!

Find the Right Lubricant

First, you should make sure that you find the best garage door lubricant. While there are plenty to choose from, you should try and buy ones that are lithium or silicone-based. They should also come as a spray.

If you get a spray form, it’ll take you a lot less time to finish your garage door maintenance.

Many people think that they can also just grab their can of WD-40 and fix it, but this doesn’t work since it’s not really a lubricant. Even though it can break down rust and de-clog things, it doesn’t help to lubricate anything so that it works well.

Plus, by using WD-40, you can even damage certain parts of your garage door, which will make it even more unsafe! You also shouldn’t use engine oil or mechanic’s grease.

Unlike WD-40, these are technically lubricants, but they also attract a lot of grime and dust. When this happens, you’ll end up blocking up your garage door, and then it won’t work.

Instead, try and find products that were made specifically for your garage door. This way, you can make sure that you get the best results and keep your garage door working for longer.

Prep the Garage Door

Once you do find the perfect garage door track lubricant, you’ll have to prep the garage door. You should always be doing maintenance on your garage door, but if you haven’t done it lately, you should do this quickly.

First, make sure that every part of the door is tight. The bolts and nuts should be snug but don’t over tight them because they could snap. If they’re worn out or old, you should purchase new garage door parts.

Next, make sure that you inspect the rollers of your garage door. These will collect grime and dust, and eventually, they could even break. When they break, they’ll wobble around and make noise.

However, you should never replace these by yourself because it could be dangerous if not done properly.

Lastly, check the hinges and the chain of the opener. If the hinges are worn, they could be causing the noise you hear. The same can happen if the chain for the opener isn’t tight enough.

If none of these problems are what’s causing your noisy issue, then you can start lubricating every part of your garage.

How to Lubricate a Garage Door

Now, you’re ready to fix your garage door! There are multiple parts of the garage door, so you should make sure that you get all of them to fix your issue.

First, you should focus on the rollers since they don’t require a lot of maintenance. When it comes to rollers, be careful about how much you use on them.

If you have steel rollers that have no covers, you should only put a small amount of lubricant on the ball bearings. If you have steel rollers that are covered in white nylon, you don’t need to use any lubrication since the ball bearings are already sealed up.

However, if you have black nylon rollers that don’t have ball bearings, you can use a little bit between the shaft and the rollers.

Next, focus on the hinge of the garage door. Look at the parts that move and put a little bit of lubrication on the brackets.

You don’t have to use much, but make sure that you do the bottom and the top of the garage.

The tracks also need a little bit of lubrication, which you can put in the horizontal section.

You don’t have to put it everywhere because when the rollers go over it, they will spread the lubrication on their own.

Focus on the springs as well, because these are likely the cause of your loud noises. These need to be lubricated often because this helps to reduce the amount of friction that’s in the steel coils.

To do this, just put a little bit of it on the springs, making sure that you start at the top. To make sure that the oil gets all over the springs, you can get a cloth and wipe it around as well. This will also help make sure that none of it gets on your floor.

Solid Shaft

The solid shaft which helps to support the torsion spring may need a little bit.

You can find an anchor plate above it, which is where you can put the lubrication.

How Often to Lubricate the Door

But how often should you lubricate the garage door? Every model will be different,t but you should be doing it about every three months or so.

This will also depend on where you live and how humid it is in your area. If you start hearing noises before three months is up,
