How to Replace Garage Door Rollers

In the United States, a burglary happens about every eighteen seconds, and many break-ins happen through the garage.

Because of this, you need to ensure that your garage is secure, and one way to do that is to make sure that your garage door rollers are working properly.

If they’re not, your garage door could get stuck open or closed, which opens your house to a possible burglary. To prevent that from happening, follow these steps to replace garage door rollers!

Diagnose the Problem

Before you can figure out why the garage door is stuck, you should figure out if it really is an issue with the rollers.

There are some common indicators that it’s broken, but one of the main ones is that you can see that there is something wrong with the track or that one of the rollers is hanging off.

You may also hear strange noises when you open or close your door. Depending on the type of garage door opener you have, it should be relatively noiseless. So if you start hearing scratching, tweaks, or banging, the roller is probably damaged.

In general, the garage door closing and opening should also be relatively smooth. If they are wiggling and vibrating, they’re not attached to the roller.

One of the most obvious signs that something is wrong if your garage door is completely stuck. This could be caused by all kinds of things, but in some cases, it’s relatively easy to fix.

Figure Out Why

First, you’ll need to figure out why even the best garage door rollers came off the track. Once you figure out why you can make sure you prevent it from happening again.

Each garage door has about ten to twelve rollers. If even one of them comes off the track, you’ll be able to see it.

Some of the common reasons that they come off include having the tracks damaged or bent. If the track is also loose, the vibrating of the garage door opening and closing can actually shake the rollers off the track.

Another reason is that you just haven’t kept up with your maintenance. Dirt and grime will build up on the track, which can cause the roller to get stuck.

Find Good Replacements

Some rollers are just damaged or worn out. They don’t last forever, so if they’re stuck or not moving well, you need to find a good replacement in order to fix it.

There are different types of rollers that you can buy, including nylon garage rollers and steel garage rollers.

When you start looking for new products, make sure that you buy ones that are of good quality. This will ensure that they last you a long time so you won’t have to replace them soon again.  If you buy a poor quality one, they could only last for a few months at most.

Steel garage rollers last the longest. However, plastic and nylon rollers are also very quiet. The nylon one will last longer than a plastic one, so that might be the best one to get.

In a nylon roller, you’ll find a nylon wheel and a metal rod. This way, you can have the advantage of having a metal roller and a nylon roller.

However, you need to ensure that it works with your garage door opener and type of garage door.

How to Repair the Roller

Once you’ve purchased a new roller, you can replace the old one. Replacing it is very simple; you just have to take the old one out and attach the new ones.

However, if you just need to repair your roller, there are a few steps that you can follow.

First Step

Make sure that you safely get on a ladder and look at the metal tracks. There should be mounting brackets that attach it to the wall.

Make sure the bolts are tight. If they’re kind of loose, make sure you tighten them, and this could end up fixing the whole problem itself!

However, if the screws are tight, look for any other damages to the tracks. If the tracks themselves are damaged, it doesn’t matter what you do to the rollers. You should look into buying new rollers instead.

Second Step

If the tracks aren’t damaged, make sure they’re bent at the right angle. They should be slanted down to help with the rolling of the garage door.

Don’t take out the screws of the tracks, but instead, just bend it slightly so that it’s angled to the right position.

Third Step

Next, try cleaning the tracks with some lubrication. You can use a regular household cleaner to remove any dirt or grease that is left behind.

Wipe the cleaner off, and then test the rollers to see if it rolls more smoothly.

Fourth Step

If none of those steps worked, you may want to try and replace the rollers yourself.

However, if you still can’t get it to work, you may want to call a professional who can help you!
